Surface Mount Technology (SMT)
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is a method used in manufacturing to mount electronic components directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). This approach contrasts with traditional through-hole technology, which involves inserting component leads through holes in the board. SMT is integral to modern electronics manufacturing, particularly within Industry 4.0, due to its ability to support automation and miniaturization. By allowing components to be placed on both sides of a PCB, SMT enables more compact and efficient designs, crucial for complex devices like smartphones and IoT sensors. While SMT improves assembly speed and reduces production costs, it requires precise equipment and can pose challenges in handling very small components.
